MotorMate by Confused.com

MotorMate by Confused.com is the easy-to-use car app to be used to show you how good a driver you are.

All you’ll need to get started with this car app is a Confused.com account. Don’t worry if you don’t already have one, you can sign up for an account when you first use the car app.

We recommend, when you undertake this first and only log in process, that your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.

The car App tells you how you rate compared to a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) expert driver.

Whereas some car apps only rate you on the movement of your vehicle, MotorMate scores you in relation to the real world driving environment.

The car app runs in the background of your phone while you’re driving. After each trip you’re given medal. This is based on how you brake, accelerate and drive at appropriate speeds. Once you reach 200 recorded miles we’ll give you your Confused.com Score out of 100. This score is more reflective of your long-term driving habits.

When the car app is first opened following install, you have to Login using a Confused.com account; you are then kept logged in for 60 days. Once logged in you can close and reopen the App continuously without having to log back in.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Disappointing Seems like a good app but when you gather your information and get a quote you'll find it doesn't do you any favours at all. For me it actually gave the highest quotes of all search engines even though it scores my driving at 97%. I have been driving 26 years and never claimed. Total waste of time.

Excellent Ive completed 200 miles brought insurance though confused put in for my 30 pounds when will I be receiving it excellent app by the way.

  • Oct. 31, 2013

Good but still needs work Good app but still needs some work. Clocked up nearly 500 miles using it now but really confused on the pace result. I take a small a-road to work and back which is quite twisty, but can easily stay at 60, corners are gentle. I stay about 50 to 60 other than at a couple of small villages with a 40 limit yet my pace score is a constant 40ish even though i get a gold medal every time. Brings my overall score down to 80ish. Would love to know how it thinks my pace is so bad.

  • Jan. 2, 2014

Rubbish, waste of time. Night trip 240 miles on motorway. Drove 60mph on cruise control, scored 31 point for low anticipation, "you brake hard every time", I barely touched the brake pedal once or twice. Erasing the app, pure waste of time.

  • Feb. 3, 2014

Has its limitations I wouldn't recommend this unless you keep your phone in a cradle while you drive - this is suggested when you install the app. If you don't, your results will likely be skewed.

  • Oct. 13, 2014

Good app Overall a good app but would be more useful if it gave a real-time view of when it thinks your driving style is not gold medal worthy, eg slow down or your accelerating to fast. Also it doesn't like you driving at 70mph on motorways or dual carriageways, what's up with that!

  • Oct. 5, 2013

Good It's a good app. But this is the 2nd time I've installed it. 12 months ago I used it and then bought my insurance through it it was great and rated my driving as excellent. This time round it keeps rating my driving style as silver and bronze even though I'm driving better and using my speed limiter (which my last car didn't have) I really don't see how I can drive better than I am :(

  • March 7, 2015

driver should be given more feedback instantly why the gold silver or bronze? if even having the best stats the %tage at the end might be low?! also why this app does not like traffic calmed arreas? I hate speed humps as they have negative feedback on suspension but why your app also is against them? what else is there that will lower the final result? can you tell or should I wait till I reach 250? Short trips also are on the negative side I suppose...

  • July 20, 2014

Differing Speed Limits for different Vehicle Types. This App could do with a setting for different vehicle types as if driving a van (Transit type) or towing different speed limits apply and this affects pace and speed. Please make the selection on the front page so swapping vehicles is easy.

  • Sept. 17, 2013

Needs an update! Links are broken and it contains information that is out of date. Was last updated nearly two years a go. Can you even still get a discount after using this?

  • April 25, 2015

Good app Really worth using as it reduced my premium by a fair bit. I recommend using a phone cradle though as when I tried using it on my passenger seat it often gave me 'aggressive acceleration' when at constant speed on the motorway.

  • Sept. 26, 2013

Needs to be smarter - frustrating! Good concept but app keeps marking me down for sharp acceleration, possibly surprising other drivers, despite not knowing if anyone is around. I have a 3 litre turbo engine - compared to a RoSPA driver's car it is probably equivalent to sharp acceleration or pushing their car's limits, but I don't use anywhere near its full potential and always drive within the speed limits. 4 or 5 stars if the app weighted the scores based on the base performance of your vehicle.

  • July 16, 2013

Inconsistent Done around 25 trips so far and have two issues for braking once doing a three point turn and the other when I forgot to turn the app off and was putting the shopping away whilst trying to stop the dog stealing the food. Also it marks you down but says you have no events to comment on ?. Not a bad idea but a lot of work needed to make it a consistent product.

  • Sept. 17, 2013

Really good app! Very impressed so far Have done a very long trip.. 297 miles to be exact and manged to get 99 overall score with I think 3 silvers and 1 gold.. app is effective and accurate + made me drive alot more carefully so I could get a good score.IMO If this concept was developed more it MAYBE able to replace the expensive black boxes that come with some insurance policies. I'm only 18 and I know people my age have to suffer painful insurance premiums for the stupidity of other peers which isn't fair to those like me who drive sensibly.

  • July 31, 2013

Does not understand motorway driving. If you spend a lot of time driving on the motorway it does not work. Consistently gives 3rd on over 500 miles of 20 motorway journeys but on town journeys gives a 1st! For me useless.

  • Aug. 27, 2013

Amazing Discounts Got a huge discount on my car insurance and all I did was drive up to see my friend over the weekend. 250 miles done in 2 days and saved £385 of my car insurance. The trip feedback really helped especially the map view of trip events, haha harsh braker

  • July 24, 2013

Unsure Driving smoothly as possible, barely used brake or gone above 3000 rpm on the engine. Knows that there were no offenses but says I should drive smoother. From three trips (each 50 miles) I got two bronze and one silver. Has anyone got gold? EDIT Managed to get gold on my last trip... I think slowing right down gradually as much as possible for junctions and lights (even green) helps as well as never moving your phone. Scored 83 overall but think that should been higher. Maybe my hard suspension doesn't help

  • July 19, 2013

Does What it Says Nice app, really makes u think about your driving style. I have a 1.2 Clio and have had no issues with the warnings. One issue I would say is that the app itself is a bit glitchy. Keep having to exit and start it again yo get it to show me my score for a trip. Also, I have less than 1 mile left so it says I have 0 miles left, could be a bit more clever in this situation :)

  • July 23, 2013

Mostly good if puzzling at times Although it has improved considerably from the first version, I still find the results to be inconsistent. My overall score is very good, but I have found that two apparently identical journeys often come up with extreme results ( i.e. one 5 and the return 2 or visa versa) I don't get any trip events, apart from once when I experimented to see how extreme actions needed to be to trigger them and although not manic, it was quite a bit more aggressive than I would normally drive. I have found It doesn't like traffic jams on motorways with a lot of stop start.

Used 1st day got GOLD 1st on all journies... seems ok not overwelming to have had done... Hi Quite excited .... All ok! To test did 1&1/2 hour, 30+ mile trip... vai town, motorway, more towns, country, villages... more towns... Testing drive: road speed used 20,30,40,70.. Good run, some testing 40 mph tight bends, up and down hills... oh!.. and a few road works! Time of day summer Aug Monday 2.30ish pm... Road not packed heavy just average good... not many left n right turns but lots of conering and bends ... managed well with finess and good observation and anticipation ;-) GOLD thx!

  • Aug. 12, 2013

Good idea but I only have a 1.2 corsa..its an easytronic (semi auto) its nippy off the mark but if u put the accelorator all the way down it barely moves.. its impossible to accelerate agressively as it keeps telling me I am... other than push the car I cant get it to stop saying it accelerates aggressively when its not even physically possible... it also keeos saying am I leaving enough distance to brake..the answer is yes..since I have never crashed or even come close to crashing... so y mark me down for not crashing

  • July 23, 2013

Fantastic Have done 100+ miles using the app. And so far its been great and so has my score. Am more aware of my driving habits which I'm pleased to say are still quite good after 20+years and lets hope it helps me with the bits I need to improve. A MUST APP FOR ALL.

  • July 31, 2013

Not informative enough I got two gold medals and no events for two short trips (<4 miles). My third trip I got a bronze with no events and it said that my driving style was not ideal and that I should keep using the app to improve. With no events and no other advice how am I supposed to improve before I get to 250 miles?

  • Sept. 3, 2013

Big Brother spyware! Driving info and your details get forwarded to insurers. Read the small print. There should be an app which shows a price breakdown of our insurance premiums! Car insurance = Legalised Highway robbery.

  • Aug. 5, 2013

Inconsistent app I can't say I'm that impressed by this app. I have it installed on my Samsung Galaxy S4 and it sits in a cradle suctioned onto my windscreen. I have around 85 miles left to complete until I've reached 250. I consider myself a safe driver and I try and anticipate what is happening ahead. I use my gears to slow down and try and give a smooth ride as possible. Not always possible with the state of the roads. I was amazed that I was receiving individual trip scores of 1 and 2 for my gentle and smooth driving. Yet yesterday, I was running quite late and thought sod it, I'll drive more spirited. Foot down, quick off the mark, heavier brake use. And guess what... I get a score of 4!! Comparing this with EcoMode on my Ford Focus which scores driver performance, I've reached maximum score and have 5 leaves (in place of stars) for anticipation, gear changing and speed. Fuel economy is also very good. I'm more inclined to go with what the car is monitoring, rather than an app that is giving inconsistent and inaccurate results. Trip feedback is also vague - calling me agressive when I've been anything but. GPS locating is quick though, that's the 1 star point.

  • July 8, 2013

Don't trust it until the update The app tells me my style is "aggressive" and gives me all zeros in the ratings. With the last version I consistently got 85% so I will hold off uninstalling until the updates improve what has been a useful app. Well the update came through and they have toned down the comments, but where are the info graphics? I want to see coloured lines of ups and downs and exactly where "MotorMate" has set the bar. Telling me to match the speed of other drivers does not help, I'm the sloth in the inside lane!

  • June 9, 2013

No problems to report, found it beneficial. Still got 20 odd miles to clock before a final score but found this beneficial. I get the impression that those rating the app negatively are those merely getting negative scores with regards to their driving style as opposed to the quality of the app. Something to bear in mind is that your style is matched up against a ROSPA expert driver so don't expect to be perfect all year round. Although I was never an erratic driver, I have found that this has made me think about my driving more.

  • June 29, 2013

Good app Found this by accident, seems to work well and hope it will save me a bundle on my insurance when its renewal time. Have used in 2 cars and seems to work fine, 400 miles first to trips scored 4,then a short trip 4 again then next 2 maybe I shouldn't have overtaken that tractor !!!!!. On the whole very pleased with it and hope this is reflected in furture insurance quotes

  • June 7, 2013

No idea how this works. Driving identically can gain completely different scores. This is the second time I have installed this, hoping it had been improved, and will be the second and last time I will uninstall it. A waste of time in reality

  • June 5, 2013

Good app Good app, works really well but finding it hard to clock up enough miles.

  • June 5, 2013

Does not score right This app is useless it does not work unlike the aviva drive app which works correctly

  • July 16, 2013

Not accurate! Despite driving like a nun the app showed excessive acceleration across an open field and through several houses near to my route. Really not fit for purpose.

  • July 9, 2013

Be wary I'm not in denial about my driving but the scores are un realistic. I drove like an angel and got a 2 out of 5. Added on after reply; well perhaps its my device or an intermittent GPS signal? Now way I could be accused of harsh acceleration My car isn't capable lol

  • May 29, 2013

Ridiculous scoring Drove normally maybe going 5mph above the speed limit on first 2 journeys then on 3rd drove absolutely below speed limit and accelerated and braked carefully. I got a score of 1 with a message saying that I drove too aggressively. Without consistency, this app is impossible to use.

  • May 27, 2013

Programmer sort this out please. Terrible app, slow slow slow to load then the ratings it provides are a joke. The older version of this app was easier to use and provided a fair and accurate score for style of driving. It stated that I was speeding, when I can honestly say that was not the case, cruise control at 64 on a 70mph motorway. The developer states on another review this will be fixed, what good does that do to our scores when we go for quotes. Poor!! If the app is faulty withdraw it or fix it straight away.

  • May 23, 2013

Quite interesting but a battery hog I reckon one full charge will do about 160 miles. Pretty useless!

  • May 24, 2013

What?! Keeps telling me I'm speeding on the motorway when my car can't go over 60! Not exactly impressed.

  • May 16, 2013

Nice upgrade from first version I get a blue screen and nothing else...so no stars from me yet Update works fine now. No more problems. Thanks guys.

  • May 23, 2013

Something isn't right When driving carefully/in no hurry I get a score of 2 or 3, yet on trips when running late and driving more aggressively/faster/braking harder etc, I get a score of 4.

  • May 30, 2013

Good app Works fine on my S3. App is pretty insightful and does give a good reflection of driving ability. It points out (the few!) bits to improve on too

  • May 14, 2013

Standing still is safest I would like to know how fast I am supposed to accelerate (real numbers for physicists would be nice, in m/s^2). I just started, but it looks like I need to accelerate and break really slow. Basically, if everybody is honking at you then you might be good enough for a gold medal. I tried for gold just now, but had to push the accelerator when a guy came really fast from behind and I didn't want to check his breaking technique so I ended up with silver. I was pulling out of a Supermarket, so I was slow.

  • May 26, 2015

No idea how this works. Driving identically can gain completely different scores. This is the second time I have installed this, hoping it had been improved, and will be the second and last time I will uninstall it. A waste of time in reality
